St. Thomas man bilked
A St. Thomas man has been bilked out of $10,000 after falling victim to what's known as a grandparent scam, St. Thomas police said in a statement Tuesday.
The man got a call from a grifter posing as an RCMP officer, who told the man his grandson was being held by the Mounties, but he could avoid a criminal record if his grandfather paid $10,000, police said.
At about 4:30 p.m. Monday, the man paid a female stranger $10,000 in cash in the area of Barwick and Hill streets, police said.
St. Thomas police say people should be suspicious of urgent requests for funds, and verify any story by contacting other family members.
Never give or send money to anyone under uncertain conditions, they added.
